Governor Abbott stresses closing the economy again is a last resort in COVID-19 response

In today’s press conference, Governor Greg Abbott advised Texans on the Minimum Standard Health Protocols for mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic. Safety procedures include staying home if you are sick or at risk, sanitizing your hands, social distancing, and wearing face coverings or masks.

The governor encouraged Texans to wear face masks to reduce the spread of COVID-19. At this time, this is a recommendation and not a mandate from the state level.

Previously, Gov. Abbott superseded local orders on face mask mandates, but a loophole found last week allows municipalities to enforce mask regulations on businesses rather than individuals. Travis County issued a mandatory face mask order for all businesses on Thursday until August 15. According to the order, failure to implement a policy by June 23 could result in a fine of up to $1,000 to the business.

The governor emphasized closing the government again would be the absolute last resort to reduce the spread of COVID-19. While today’s announcement advised on individual safety procedures, future limitations may come forward if the infection rate increases prior to full closing of the economy.

In his closing remark during the Q&A portion, the Governor mentioned re-closing businesses if the contraction rates doubles within the month. This comment may be more of a passing remark rather than a tangible benchmark.
